A day in the life of Stage Manager Samantha Frickell

Sami has been working on very interesting theater plays. She will be completing an internship with the Denver Center For Performing Arts this summer. Her latest work has been with the Catwalk Theatre Company of Pomona High School.

What's your typical work day look like?

I wake up at about 6 am everyday and leave the house by 7:15. I am in school from 7:45- 3:00 almost everyday. Rehearsal for shows start right after school. I am either helping out the cast or helping the crew. It depends on who needs me the most that day. And then at 6:00 rehearsal is over and I wait for my directors leave (since I am technically suppose to be the last one to leave but can't since they have the keys) and I am usually out the door by 6:30 at the latest. I have a 20 minute drive home and I then I do some Musical work at home. I am in bed by 10:00.

What's the best thing about your job?

The best thing is the connections I create with people. My role as stage manager is really hard because as soon as rehearsal starts I become a figure of authority. And so its hard for me to switch from being a classmate and a stage manager. But I love how over the years I gained a respect from people and that makes it way easier. The way I gained a respect is creating connections with people who I never imagined.

What's the worst thing about your job?

I think the worst thing is when I have to tell my directors when someone breaks contract. Breaking contract usually results in removal from the show. But it is important that we make this production as professional as possible. But it sucks to see my friends lose something they love.

Minimum education required for the job:

Being in high school this job didn't require an education but I learn something new everyday. And I am able to apply it that day and become better at what I do. But in the real world this job requires a bachelor of arts or bachelor of fine arts. Which takes many years to acquire. And I am about to spend at least the next 6 years of my life working toward that goal.
