James Dolores is a very talented dancer and dance instructor. He is currently working for Fred Astaire (Denver North).
What's
your typical work day look like?
James Dolores |
I normally get into the studio around 10am or
11am for rehearsal until noon. From noon to 2pm my team and I plan for
the day and train on various concepts such as teaching, dancing, and interpersonal
skills. From 2pm to 9pm I teach dance lessons. Depending on the day of the
week, I will stay after work to rehearse as well.
Best
thing about the job
Making a positive
impact on someone's life and watching them grow. There is nothing more
rewarding than being a part of someone's growth, whether it's in their dancing,
confidence, social skills, etc.
Worst
thing about the job
Sore muscles and
feet!
Stress
Level
Medium to high; It
honestly depends on the day. Dealing with so many different personalities
in one day can be a bit overwhelming. However, I never leave work upset because
I get so much joy out of teaching and dancing.
Hours Sitting
Maybe one hour a day.
Hours Moving
Easily four to seven
depending on the types of lessons I am teaching that day--teaching an
individual student vs. teaching a couple.
Hours Standing
Again, easily four to
seven depending on the types of lessons being taught.
Weekend Hours
Little to none.
We work special events every few months, but it's never more than one day.
Best Personality
Type for the job
Anyone with enough dedication.
Extroverts are at an advantage due to how much we interact with people. However,
I truly believe that ANYONE can excel in this industry if they are dedicated
enough.
Daily Hours
As a Professional
Competitor, I put in about 10-12 hours a day, including my dance rehearsal
times and normal work schedule. An
instructor that is not competing professionally or performing in shows would
average closer to 8 hours daily
Shift
12pm-9pm five days a
week is a normal work schedule.
License
We take routine dance
certification exams with a licensed coach.
Minimum Education
High School
Diploma. Fred Astaire Dance Studios has an amazing teacher/dance training
program!
