Pomona High School Principal Andy Geise (Twitter @PomonaPrincipal) shared the following.
What's your typical work day look like?
No two days are the same. In general, I take
some time first thing in the morning to check emails and prioritize any
communication needs. I spend some time with students in the morning and
make sure they get to class, and school is underway. I usually have some
work I can do in my office—and that can take many forms…it could be gathering
data for school improvement, it could be communication to the community, maybe
some small projects that need my attention, or perhaps planning ahead for an
upcoming meeting. I also try to spend an hour or two per day in
classrooms. During student lunch hour, I supervise the cafeteria which is
a great time to see students and be around them. I am asked for money or
support several times each day, so I have to make informed decisions on all of
those. I might spend 10 minutes per day sending out some posts on
Twitter, if I see something that makes a good story. After school I
supervise out front as students leave. I work about 45 minutes more after
students leave.
Best thing about the job:
Working with the students. Anything involving
students makes it a great day.
Worst thing about the job:
The state accountability system can be highly
frustrating.
Career Duration:
I worked 13 years as a teacher, 3 years as an
assistant principal, 10 years as a principal, and 4 to go!
Stress Level:
High.
Hours Sitting:
In the typical 8-hour work day, I probably sit 4
hours. After hours, I’m not sitting at all (athletic events, dances,
etc.)
Hours Moving:
Probably about 2 hours in a typical day. After
hours, I move quite a bit.
Hours Standing:
Typical day is probably 2 hours. After hours,
that’s all I do. (After the first football game of the year when I stand
for 3 hours, my back tells me I must have taken the summer off.)
Weekend Hours:
About 2 hours. Usually to cover an athletic
event or maybe a concert or play.
Daily Hours:
7-3:30 and then a couple nights per week it includes
7-9 pm.
Best Personality Type for the job:
Level-headed. Calm. Measured. Ability to work within gray areas. Patience.

Professional

For an administrator, a master’s degree is needed.
