Dale Munholland (middle)

What's your typical work day look like?
The typical teacher workday is from 7-3, but the vast majority of teachers put in 2-3 hours more each day. I personally arrive at school every day around 4:30 am and spend the first three hours of my day grading, planning lessons, answering emails, doing any copying I may need to do and then do maybe an hours’ worth of work after school.

Best thing about the job:
I thoroughly love my job. I love being able to share my passion for history with young people and help them become productive citizens.

Worst thing about the job:
I don’t like grading its tedious, time consuming and at times never-ending.

Career Duration:
The average teaching career is about 5 years. I have been teaching for 21 years and plan to do so for the at least the next 9 years. If I still enjoy teaching when I reach 30 years, then I will continue to teach

Stress Level:
Depends on the time of year and what is happening at the time, but it usually ranges between Medium and High stress level.

Hours Sitting:
Usually I sit down around 3-4 hours a day and am on my feet the rest of the day

Hours Moving:
It's not a lot of strenuous movement but I am walking around and moving most of the day.

Hours Standing:
Not a lot of standing still, maybe less than an hour or two every day.

Weekend Hours:
Not typically required, but most teachers usually do grading or planning at least a few weekends each month for a few hours

Daily Hours:
Required hours are 7-3 but more teachers work more than that

Shift:
Day shift

Best Personality Type for the job:

Have to be very flexible, understanding, have good interpersonal skills and a great sense of humor helps a lot.

License:
Need a Teaching Licence and it is renewed every 5 years in Colorado.

Minimum Education:
Must have at least a BA. Most teachers will go on and earn an MA.
